Each August, Crookston celebrates its heritage with the Ox Cart Days Festival held in the city’s Central Park. The four-day celebration includes something for everyone, from bed races to pageants and parades.

The weekend also features the Classic Car Show, which is now considered one of the top shows in the entire region.

The Polk County Museum, one of the finest museums anywhere, is located on Highway 2 east in Crookston.

Museum displays include the following:

  • School house from the 1890s
  • Two-room prairie house built in 1881
  • Summer kitchen
  • Recreated blacksmith shop
  • Regional fire equipment museum—New in 2000
  • A pioneer kitchen, living room, and bedroom
  • Country store
  • Dental and medical clinics
  • A communication center (featuring typewriters, a telephone switchboard, and other early forms of communication)

The museum is open daily from May to September.

On the northern edge of the community, you’ll find the campus called, "the college of the future today" by Wall Street Journal. University of Minnesota, Crookston is a four-year coordinate campus of the University of Minnesota system. UMC is the original "laptop university", issuing notebook computers to all full-time students since 1993.

According to past University of Minnesota president, Mark Yudof, he wishes all the University’s campuses looked as beautiful as Crookston! There are many beautiful flowerbeds on campus; you can’t miss them. The campus is also home to the Northwest Research and Outreach Center, the Extension Service, Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) state offices, and the Valley Technology Park.
